That Homemade mouthwash for healthy gums!

Homemade mouthwash!

So, about 3 weeks ago, my tooth started aching badly and it was weird as my general mouth health is on point. Especially after I paid my dentist a visit at the beginning of the year and after she told me everything was in a good shape. It could only be related to the accident I had about 5 years ago when my jaw broke and it literally split in half and two of my teeth nearly fell out- it was gruesome- I thought I was going to be deformed for life. Thank God, I didn’t. *all smiles*

As usual I kept rinsing my mouth with warm water & Himalayan salt after I brush my teeth and hoped for the best, but the pain didn’t go away and suddenly I had the urge to make my own mouth wash. I stopped using mouth wash for a while now as it started eating up my gums, so I’ve had to rely on the Himalayan salt rinse for a while. The new mouthwash is amazing and after a day the pain was gone and now I’m in love with my mouthwash. It gives you a pleasant burning sensation just like the real mouthwash does, but only better and spicier. I’ve also noticed my teeth getting whiter and cleaner and my gums healthier. I haven’t had a single pain since I started using my miracle mouth wash. #happydays

You’ll need:

1 teaspoon of fine salt ( preferably Himalayan salt)

1 teaspoons of black pepper powder

1 teaspoons of cinnamon powder

Here’s what I made….

mouthwash

It really depends on how spicy you want it, so it’s up to you if want to increase the amounts. Try it and find your own perfect mix. The spicier the better! I sometimes put more black pepper when I want it stronger. You can keep adding warm water to your mix and also add more black pepper and cinnamon if you like it strong. The stronger the better!!

Directions:

Mix all the ingredients together with warm water and rinse your mouth after you brush your teeth. You can also use it anytime you want- even in the middle of the day. There are no rules here.

Benefits

The antibacterial property of black pepper helps to fight against infections and as a result  it reduces pain and inflammation in your gums.

Cinnamon is effective against gum infection mainly because of its antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It’s been used for years to heal gum infections, which I think is why there’s a cinnamon gum- my childhood favourite chewing gum. The warm water along with the salt helps to pull “fluid” out of the gum tissue, therefore reducing swelling, alleviating pain, and killing harmful bacteria.

Back problems and Yoga!

Well, hello dear folks

Recently I have been experiencing a back pain and I’ve noticed this only happens when I go on holidays. The reasons could be endless but I suspect it could be because I stop stretching and exercising at all, apart from walking endlessly trying to discover as much as I can. I hear you say walking should be enough for exercising but it’s not good enough as you only move the same muscles and forget about the rest. Common sense!!! I love site seeing too. Good! I hear you say, but it could also be a problem if you don’t rest up properly and don’t do your stretching. My love for walking and site seeing didn’t marry up properly without stretching. Usually I do yoga in the mornings before going to work and if I start feeling back pain I stretch like there is no tomorrow, but carefully as I don’t want to pull any muscles out of their resting place. *sigh*

Yoga is one of the best things that I have ever discovered. It’s well underrated and underestimated. I discovered that the perception of it is very wrong. Though it comes from the Buddha, it doesn’t necessarily mean you worship Buddhism if you practice yoga; and this is what most people think. Another perception is that yoga is just sitting down pointing your fingers and humming. WRONG! I thought the same, before I actually discovered the real deal. Not only it’s good for stretching, but it also helps with your core strength and with toning up. It thought me how to breathe, how to balance, listen to my body and relax.

img-20160829-wa0015

I went to see a doctor as the pain was excruciatingly painful; and guess what she told me to do? Stretching! That’s right. You guessed it or not.

The reason why I wanted to share this is ‘cos I wanted everyone to get used to stretching and exercising even if it’s a little bit. Don’t ignore your body! If exercising is a bit boring for you and you’re not cut out for it- then dancing is always an option as you move every muscle of your body and is the best exercise one can get. If dancing is out of question, then you either need to think about it or find something else you can do that can move your muscles. You don’t have to spend hours doing it- 30min a day is enough. If dancing isn’t good either, well then- you need help!

Having said that though, we also need to watch what we eat and be careful about our diet. I have realised HEALTH IS THE BIGGEST WEALTH! I think this was a wake-up call for me. Don’t underestimate it. Spend a little cash on your wellbeing. Go crazy! don’t be shy! Go to sauna or have a SPA day if you can. Instead of spending it on alcohol or a big night out- spend it on your health. See it as a long term investment. You will see you’ll feel better and refreshed after and money well spent too. The bottom line is you need to treat your body with respect- if not then it won’t respek ( with Ali G’s voice) you back.

Epsom salt!

Dear readers, as promised here’s some facts and my personal experiences on Epsom salt and why we should always have it at home and use it. Epsom salt is not actually salt but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate.

Epsom salt is a miracle I’ve discovered by accident. I was just looking to get any type of dead sea salt as I’ve read it’s good for our health and skin too, but instead I found Epsom salt and boy do I love it!!! So far, no regrets and money well spent.  It has so many uses and benefits but we’re going to focus on health today.

Here are some health benefits of the miracle salt:

·         Relaxes the nervous system

·         Cures skin problems

·         Soothes back pain and aching limbs

·         Eases muscle strain

·         Draws toxins from the body

·         It boosts magnesium levels- will talk about magnesium next time

·         Reduces pain and inflammation

How I use it?

There’s different ways of using Epsom salt:

1: On a damp skin you can start rubbing a handful of Epsom salt gently ( don’t be too harsh on the skin). Leave it until it dries which takes about 2 minutes. Your skin will look ashy so don’t be alarmed by it. Then was it off. This process easily removes dead cells helping your skin look healthier and feel softer. You will feel a little itchy until it dries, but it will go away as soon as you wash it- so be patient, it’s not burning your skin.

2:  You can make a body scrub as shown below. All you need is about 4 tablespoons of epsom salt, 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and a lemon/lime zest with or without the juice. Massage it on your skin gently and rinse after 2min. Your skin is going to thank you for this.

3: You can have a bath with it or even add a bit of baking soda for extra muscle relief after a workout. Trust me, this is one of the best things I’ve ever discovered. I soak for about 30minutes and the skin does not get wrinkly at all. I take a glass of water with me to drink when I have my bath. Make sure you finish your water, you might feel dizzy if you don’t hydrate yourself when you come out. You’ll need about 2 cups of the salt for your bath. If you want to add the baking soda to it, first you need to transfer your 2 cups in a large plastic container then add boiling water and gently put about 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Be careful of the reaction as it gets fizzy. After it’s nicely mixed pour it on your bath water. You can add essential oils if you want to make your bathing experience extra special and relaxing. Lavender oil is perfect for this purpose and also if you’re having trouble sleeping at night.

4: You can soak your feet in it- the easiest way to absorb magnesium and keep your feet and body healthy. You will need about half a cup for this.

I’ve noticed that my skin gets softer and much more smoother after I use it. I’ve learned that we can absorb magnesium through our skin which most of us have deficiency of and I get so relaxed and feel very light after my bath. All the above 4 methods are effective but my favorite one is number 3. Some people also drink it but I’m not there yet.

Every time we work out, our muscles hurt; especially if we haven’t exercised in a while. But recently as soon I finish my work out I’ve been taking Epsom salt baths with baking soda and the next morning the pain is almost non- existent. No limping anymore, which means you can get back to your gym the next day if you wish to depending on how you feel. But remember not to abuse your muscles.

 Where do I get  mine?

I bought my first bag from a health store. I paid £4.50 for one kg but I went on amazon and bought 10Kg for £15- it don’t get any cheaper than that. Enjoy!!

Note: You should not take Epsom salt baths if you are pregnant, have exposed cuts or burns on your skin, or are severely dehydrated. People who suffer from cardiovascular disease should first consult a doctor before taking an Epsom salt bath.

Till next time, love and peace 🙂

Spirulina

What is spirulina?

A superfood algae packed with a lot of nutrients that are good for the body.

I’ve come across this golden dust (well, really the colour is strong lime green, but I’m still going to call it golden) almost two years ago. I have decided to buy it a year later and have been taking it since then- not every day though. I usually take it half an hour before a work out if I remember and it gives me a lot of energy. I’ve also noticed my dark circles getting lighter when I take it regularly. The taste is not pleasant but my argument is if you drink alcohol and you can knock back a shot- you sure can do this too. It’s really a superfood for the strong hearted. If you decide to buy it and you can’t drink it, don’t throw it away- it makes a perfect face mask.

The best way to take it is to mix it with lemon juice, apple juice or pineapple juice and take it as a shot. I normally take it with apple juice or pineapple juice- whichever I have at home. The reason I do this is because I tried taking it with water and it leaves an after taste which I don’t like. The recommended dose is one teaspoon and make sure you drink at least a glass of water after you take it.

spirulina

Health benefits of Spirulina:

  • It promotes cell generation, it helps wounds heal quicker, and makes recovery from illnesses occur faster
  • It’s rich in vitamin A and this vitamin is exceptionally important for healthy eyes.
  • Helps Improve the Digestive System
  • Spirulina Helps the Body Detox Naturally
  • It’s very high in iron, making it beneficial to those with anemia with reduced risk of constipation
  • It’s a good source of protein: gram per gram more than beef, poultry, fish, and soybeans
  • It has four times the antioxidant ability of blueberries
  • 2800% more beta-carotene than carrots.
  • 3900% more iron than spinach.
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • reduces Cholesterol

Where did I get mine?

You can get it from a health store like Holland and Barrett, but I got mine from Amazon about a year ago and still have it. I paid about £9 for 500g which I think is reasonable. A little goes a long way, trust me. Enjoy!

Cheers to a better health!

How I make body cream at home!

Home made body butter!

Here’s another product I make at home-I call it coco-Shea body butter (Coconut and Shea butter) Snap! The obsession of me trying to get away from all the chemical filled world has gotten the best of me. Well, I try! and trying is always better. Don’t you just love the ideas that come flooding your way and the endless possibilities if you just tried a little bit?!

Bersi, hurry up! What are the ingredients I hear you say. Here’s what you need to make this luscious body butter.

body butter ingr

Ingredients:

1 tablespoons of Shea butter

2-3 tablespoons of raw coconut oil

1 tablespoon of calendula infused oil

½ tablespoon of vitamin E oil and

2 drops of lemongrass oil just to change the smell of it ( you can add your favourite scented oil for the scent you want to achieve- lavender oil is an option here). Don’t put too much of it as it’s a strong oil and might irritate your skin.

You can read the benefits of each oil in your own time.

Steps:

  • Put the Shea butter in a glass jar and put the jar on boiling water pot and let it melt for 2 min only- not more than that. You don’t want the butter to melt all the way through- just halfway will do until it’s nice and soft. Here’s what it’d like after you melt it halfway through:

collage oil

  • Take it off the heat and put the coconut oil to it and the rest of the ingredients except for the lemongrass:
  • Mix it all well together and put it in the fridge for about 45 minutes and it will look like this after you’ve taken it out:

after frid

  • Start beating it mercilessly after you’ve taken it out
  • Then add the lemongrass oil
  • Beat it up for about 15 minutes and there you have it. The more you beat it the softer it gets
  • I then add an extra tablespoon of coconut oil to achieve an extra silky body butter after 2-3 days.

Finally it’ll look like this. The first image is fresh after you finished beating it ( that’s why it looks runny) and the second image is taken 2 days later and after I added an extra bit of coconut oil. Coconut oil is what makes it soft and fluffy; without it’ll be heavy and you don’t want that. Trust me! I speak from experience!

oil fin

Note: it tends to melt down when it’s hot. So place it in a cool place, far away from windows and away from heat ( it can’t resist the heat, so it’s definitely leaving the kitchen too). Shea butter is very heavy so you only need a little bit. If it melts, put it back in the fridge again for 15 minutes- it will be good as new. I buy mine from any African/Indian hair shops or even Amazon and it lasts me for a year. Money well spent!

I have been using this cream for about 6 months now and it’s gorgeous and makes my skin smooth and nourished. It’s all about feeding your skin all that goodness. You only need a little bit so don’t go crazy with it to avoid having too much oily skin.  Allow few minutes for it to get absorbed into your skin and dry before you dress up.

Tip 1: always apply your cream when your skin is moist; that way it will be easier to apply and it’ll also be better absorbed.

oil pulling- teeth whitening at home!

How to whiten your teeth at home- oil pulling

When a very good friend of mine, Miru told me about oil pulling, at first I was a bit sceptical but then when she mentioned it again, I thought maybe this’s meant to be. She’s about to be a qualified dentist (so proud of her!) and if she says it’s good, who am I to argue with that right? So I decided to give it a go.

Oil pulling involves placing a tablespoon of coconut oil, sesame or olive oil  into your mouth and then swishing it around for up to 20 minutes, minimum 10 minutes (pulling it between your teeth), before spitting it out. But since I had coconut oil at home and I know it helps whiten your teeth, I decided to go with coconut oil. For best results do it in the morning before you eat anything. I remember when I first came to London I met a guy who seemed to think my teeth were white and said “give it few more years and they’ll be yellow”. HAH! mate, if you’re reading this the joke is on you.

Initially I had few reservations and my concerns were, how will I manage 20 minutes (especially when I have a busy morning before going to work), what about excess saliva, what if it’s oily… etc. But it all turned out to be no problem at all, and it didn’t feel greasy either; and you have a lovely “Bounty-like” taste the whole time. (I don’t even like Bounty, but I still managed to do it). So, for the bounty lovers this is going to be an easy ride.

coconut oilpic

I do it while I’m preparing my lunch for the day and ironing my shirt for work (A queen of multi-tasking right! I know!). One thing though, the oil will double in size which is a sign that it’s pulling out all the toxins; so don’t be put off by that.

Now – I have been doing this for longer than a month and I noticed my teeth were getting whiter after a week, and the overall health of my mouth improved a lot. My teeth are generally healthy and fairly white, but oil pulling made it even whiter.

If I were you, I would get on it right away! if it wasn’t good I wouldn’t endorse it.

Note: people always have commented on my teeth and I’m happy to share my secret: Change your toothpaste! Just like you change your shampoo for your hair. common sense!

Instructions:

  • First choose your oil, and then swish it around for 20min for best results- if not 10min will do.
  • Be gentle- no need to be aggressive. Remember you are doing it for 20 minutes and you don’t want to get stiff jaws.
  • Do not swallow it! As you’ll be taking all the bacteria and toxins into your body (after all, we are trying to get rid of them).
  • After you finish swishing don’t spit the oil out on your sink as it will block your pipes- spit it out in any empty jar that you’re not going to use or even your bin
  • Then, wash your mouth with salt and warm water
  • Don’t forget to brush your teeth after. Oil pulling is not a replacement for brushing your teeth.
  • Use a different tooth brush for it and rinse your brush with hot water after you finish

My experiences

  • Noticed my teeth became whiter and cleaner than they normally are.
  • My gums used to bleed sometimes and this has stopped completely after day 12. Not even a tear of blood which means the gums are a lot healthier now.
  • My teeth were sensitive and oil pulling helped reduce this. I actually started eating oranges now. Happy days!
  • It became easier for my teeth to be clean when bushing and there are no dental plagues anymore building up.
  • However, on my first day of doing it, I got a headache but that stopped the next day.
  • Funny enough, it also helps with a hangover. Amazables! I haven’t had a hangover in a long time. How about that!!!
